Hivemind Times Issue #57

Too much to say about this week's Album Rec + DOUBLE MOVIE REVIEW

Welcome To The Hivemind Times!

Hey there Hivemind Times readers. First things first, we have to talk about it. Yes we dropped Jeopardy this week and it may have been the most electric episode of it thus far.

Other than that, it’s been a pretty dry week for the news. Hopefully we have another second channel coming out today but we will all just have to wait and see. How Did It Age will be out for sure and it is on the musical comedic master piece Walk Hard which if you haven't seen you should watch right now.

Enough house keeping I hope this Newsletter supplies you with a brief moment of escapism whether it is the tunes, Cronk’s van, my shitty movie reviews or just a laugh at some funny picture.

Stay informed and stay smart. Have a good day.

MOVIE REVIEW

DOUBLE FEATURE mini reviews (NO SPOILERS)

Naked Gun ‘25 2.5/5 stars

Ok Naked Gun was a fucking blast, lets get that straight. Truly was a bit inspirational to see a modern comedy just load up the clip and let the jokes fly non-stop. The whole plot is just background paint for a never ending onslaught of one liners. While it does lean heavily on what you all might describe as more Riley’s sense of humor, I found myself really having a blast.

Ridiculous dumb fight scenes and pretty incredible writing make for this to be a total breath of fresh air in the comedy major motion picture scene. Shout out to Paul Walter Houser who emerges as a funny and capable counterpart to Neison. Most of us probably recognize him from season 2 episode 4 of I think You Should Leave.

Another tip of the big old cap goes to the queen Pam Anderson who shined in The Last Showgirl in 2024 and again proves that she has the chops to be both serious and or hilarious. Her scat distraction scene is maybe the funniest part of the whole movie.

Highest 2 Lowest 3.5/5 stars

Now on to the most recent Spike Lee joint.

Highest 2 Lowest is a spiritual sequel or remake(?) of Akira Kurasawa’s Highs and Lows. Starring Denzel fucking Washington as still, but mainly used to be, badass music industry mogul, who is in the midst of a major business scheme and has to confront another incredibly tough financial decision? Whatever. It’s pretty beautiful and has some down right vintage Denzel moments coupled with Spike’s innate ability to needle drop some bangers - this one really worked on me.

I will also say that it is nice for both of these men (Spike and Denzel) to embrace this particular story. Denzel as the man living in the wake of his massive success and struggling to grapple with the loss of truly being in touch with the youth. And Spike depicting this luxurious Dumbo apartment dawned with amazing art work dealing with the uglier side of the business once you become “The Man”. The main character's decision forces him to confront the feeling of losing everything but inevitably reminds him of why he got in the game to begin with.

It can be a little cringey at times and that is not helped by some atrocious acting from those other than Denzel playing the Kings. And the score is super odd at times but it just kept winning me over. Post the first 35 minutes, it is a genuine thrill and I’ll say it: A$ap Rocky is a pretty good fucking actor. Would highly recommend watching this now that it has been rushed out onto Apple.

POEM OF THE WEEK

Rupert Brooke 1887-1915

(This guy rules read his stuff)

Peace

Now, God be thanked Who has watched us with His hour,
And caught our youth, and wakened us from sleeping,
With hand made sure, clear eye, and sharpened power,
To turn, as swimmers into cleanness leaping,
Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary,
Leave the sick hearts that honour could not move,
And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary,
And all the little emptiness of love!

Oh! we, who have known shame, we have found release there,
Where there's no ill, no grief, but sleep has mending,
Naught broken save this body, lost but breath;
Nothing to shake the laughing heart's long peace there
But only agony, and that has ending;
And the worst friend and enemy is but Death.
