Hivemind Times Issue #50

We got movies, we got food - what more do you want

Welcome To The Hivemind Times!

They said we couldn’t make it 50 issues in. They said no one would read your stupid newsletter. They said print media delivered via email was cooked and this was a pointless endeavor. Well guess what now fuckers we did it! You did it! You, the unwavering constituents that make up the readership of The Hivemind Times, allowed for almost a year of a couple mad men to ramble and fill your minds with all sorts of bull shit.

I’m gonna give ya a little movie homework this week and I would love to hear back if anyone watches them. Also check out the latest on what I whipped up to eat.

On the video front we dropped Guess the rapper from the really old song this week which marked the long awaited return of the infamous Dignan. If you missed that please go enjoy, and god willing there is a premiere on Unlimited today!

MOVIE REVIEW

Movie suggestions from Graydon

This is me recommending you a group of random movies with nothing in common!

Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat (Johan Grimonperez, 2024)

Ok this is a doc but holy shit I just watched this and now you have to.

I feel like once a year I watch a documentary that is so brilliant in its ability to intertwine complex historical themes and ideas that it restores my faith in cerebral storytelling and makes me question why everything isn’t just a good documentary. That being said if you like Jazz and have a feeling America is fishy imperialist fuck suckers this is the shit for you.

The Wind Rises (Hayao Miyazaki, 2023)

I continuously feel like this is the most underrated Miyazaki/Ghibli movie ever but you can be the judge.

It’s set in the real world which I love. It’s truly heartbreaking which I love. It tells the story of the industrial revolution's impact on the world through the lens of a Japanese boy who is so romantic about aeronautical engineering he creates perfect machines for death and has to grapple with that moral quandary. I fuck with it the big way!

Hard Eight (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1996)

This one’s for my gamblers and degens and lovers of manipulation and exploitation of human weakness based on vice.

This is one of the greatest directors of our time, so I feel like it’s an essential watch to appreciate the rest of his works properly. On top of that I do feel like this one gets slept on because Boogie Nights came out the following year. It rocks tho and Philip Baker Hall and John C Reilly make such a good duo.

Rumblefish (Francis Ford Coppola, 1983)

A spiritual sequel or maybe the improved version of The Outsiders?

Don’t matter what ya call it or how ya cut it, Matt Dillon puts his whole ass into this one and Francis does the splits on it. Drug torn Oklahoma biker gang shit and just the right touch of animal activism! This movie deserves to be watched.

RECIPES

Red Snapper x Broccoli Rabe x Fries?

I don’t know what happened last night but I whipped this up and boy oh boy did it slap the teeth out my mouth.

I procured myself a fat filet of fresh red snapper, a bunch of broccoli rabe (which is actually in the mustard family fun fact) and a damn tater.

We are gonna dress the snapper up with a white wine caper sauce thing so stay tuned.

First off tho I blanched that rabe because it can be super bitter. “How do you blanch Graydon?”, you might be asking - well it's easy. Boil that bunch of rabe after you cut its ends off for like 3 mins then throw it in a bowl of ice water - boom.

Your potato that you’ve cut into desired frie shape should also be soaking in ice water in order to get the starch out, then pat dried.

Ok dry that snapper and put some salt and p on there. Put some cornstarch on the skin side and crisp it up in a pan for a few minutes (think like 55-60% cooked fish) then remove it from the pan.

Now we gonna deglaze with garlic, shallot, oil, white wine and capers. Pop that fish back in skinside up and surround it with that rabe until the fish is white all the way through to your desired doneness?

As for the fries, I just used the air fryer and then tossed em around with parm and parsley.

Paired with a white Bordeaux (nothing too tropical)

Meal was phenomenal - if you chose to try it, have fun!
