Hivemind Times Issue #16

Welcome To The Hivemind Times!

HO HO HO Happy day after Thanksgiving for those who eat stuff in America. It’s your close personal and family friend Graydon here. I just popped a capon in the oven, don’t worry I’ll tell ya what that is later.

Hope you guys enjoyed the mini marathon we put on this week when we dropped a video on every channel on Wednesday. Do you like that? You want more of that shit? Maybe we will do it again, maybe not, who the hell knows? Can’t wait for you fools to see what else we got up our sleeve for the remainder of the winter.

Anyway enjoy what we were able to put together this week and kiss ya grandmas for me.

MOVIE REVIEW

Anora Review (MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS) (3/5)

I saw Anora, the newest film by freaky director Sean Baker. This movie was highly anticipated for me in particular because I snuck into the after party at the Toronto Film Fest where I drunkenly met Bill Murray and pretended I had just seen the movie so we had something in common to talk about. He hated me. Can’t blame him. Was also lucky enough to shake ol Sean’s hand too.

All that hooplah had me excited to see this movie when it finally released to the public. I even chipped away at his filmography over the last month or so, with some stand outs being Red Rocket, The Florida Project, and Tangerine.

Anora had a similar slice of life kind of feel to it where you just get plopped into a strip club and you meet our protagonist entertaining the many different kinds of men who occupy these kinds of joints. She gets plucked by her boss to take care of a young Russian big spender because she speaks Russian. This relationship ends up showing Anora, who goes by Annie, the finer side of life through the lens of an adolescent hedonist who sucks at having sex. Annie gets in way over her head and ends up getting in a messy chase about the city trying to track down said hedonist man child, which ends in a familiar sense of failure or melancholy or just dissatisfaction as in other SB movies.

The main difference between this film and the aforementioned standouts from this filmography is the trade of blue collar or straight up poverty for luxury and opulence, and for me that wasn’t a good trade. I think those other films touched a more relatable thing with me that really allowed me to suspend my reality for the entire movie and Anora struggled to do that for me. I gave it three stars and I would definitely rewatch with a closer eye on some of the characters. Mickey Madison really steals the show and has a badass New York accent. Overall not his best but would recommend.

VIDEO GAMES

Hey guys it’s Grant, I officially have purchased my streaming/gaming PC!! I’m very excited to start streaming video games / doing football watch alongs with you guys. There is a poll (see above) with video games I haven’t played yet that I’ve been holding off on for this very moment. I would love for this to be a community driven experience and I want to try and beat as many games as humanly possible, and play games with you all! I am an elite gamer of precision, speed, and aerodynamics.

As stated earlier, there’s a poll listed in here with a bunch of games that I haven’t played yet. The winner of this poll will be the first game I play and beat. (I also really want to play Marvel Rivals when it comes out)

MUSIC REVIEW

Riley’s Music Roundup

hello everyone. I feel an apology is in order. if you routinely tune into our thursday live streams, by now you’ve undoubtedly seen me make countless empty promises. I said I’d review the bright eyes album, the tyler the creator album, and so many others. I’m sorry for letting you all down. see, here’s the thing: on thursday nights I usually get together with 15-20 of my closest friends to watch football and drink espresso martinis. as unmitigated joy fills my soul, my responsibilities slip away.

while that does wonders for my mental health, it does give you guys less stuff to read - and that sucks. I’ll try to be better but I’m done making promises that I can’t keep.

I’m also the kind of person who places unnecessary pressure on myself. If I start writing a review, I’m gonna try and make it actually good and not just passable for our newsletter. So as thursday night turns into friday morning and coffee liqueur flows through my veins, the task of delivering a high quality piece of music journalism becomes even more daunting. In an effort to shake my own fastidiousness, here’s some bullshit about music. not even gonna spellcheck it.

I won’t try and retrace my steps on those albums I said I’d review. I’ve been listening to a lot of old warren zevon lately - mostly his 1975 self-titled record and 1978’s excitable boy. that dude rocked. might be top 5 coolest dude ever. check out “poor poor pitiful me” and “roland the headless thompson gunner.”

as for new music, I think the new ally evenson album is an AOTY contender and not just because she’s one of my best friends. this album is seriously awesome from start to finish - the sequencing is PERFECT too. my favorites right now are “cross my fingers,” “something in the water,” and “virtual bottle.”

Kendrick’s surprise album GNX is fantastic too. There are a dillion things we could get into about what it means, themes from the record, subtle and not-so-subtle shots he’s taking at people, or if there’s another record on the way - but I’ll just say I think it’s a really good hip hop record, potentially the best of 2024. My favorites are “wacced out murals,” “tv off,” “dodger blue,” and “luther” which is probably the best melodic song he’s ever released. Also I don’t see enough people talking about how good roddy ricch sounds on “dodger blue.”

okay that’s all the music talk I have in me tonight. sorry for lying about all those reviews I was gonna do. I just love my friends and probably don’t want to be a journalist. I hope you all had great weeks, and great holidays if you live in turkey town. thanks for watching our videos and reading our newspaper. more on this at 7.

RECIPES

Toasted Orzo Chicken Nood

What you need…

Orzo
Stick of butter
Chicken (your choice, about 1lb)
Bone broth
Chicken stock (most recipes call for 8 cups)
Garlic
Celery
Carrot
Onion
Kale
Lemon
Chili oil

What you’ll do…

Slowly stir around a stick of butter and a healthy amount of orzo until golden brown. Then throw your chicken in some boiling broth, I used bone broth and chicken stock, until cooked through, shred that stuff up when it's done.

Sautee your veg (garlic, onion, celery, carrot). Massage and chop up some kale to add in too. Keep your toasted orzo in a bowl to add in later. Get the rest of the stuff partying together. Garnish at the end with some lemon and chili oil.

This is literally in the pot for me rn and I have no idea if it’s good, so good luck.

…what the hell is a capon you asked?

It’s a castrated rooster. I don’t know why that makes the poor bird delicious but it does.
